Passion concert «Le chemin de la croix» at St. Gallen Cathedral

Marcel Dupré's haunting composition " Le chemin de la croix " from 1932, which describes the 14 stations of the cross of Jesus' Passion, will be performed at this year's Passion Concert on 10 March 2024 at 16.30 at St. Gallen Cathedral.
Cathedral organist Christoph Schönfelder will interpret this very demanding and highly complex organ work, while cathedral priest Beat Grögli will read the complex texts – which he revised himself - by the French writer Paul Claudel, who described the 14 stations of Christ's Passion in poetic form.
The musically expressive composition was created as an improvisation to accompany the text and was only written down by Marcel Dupré afterwards. The work is one of the most important compositions of the 20th century for the organ. Although stylistically belonging to the French organ symphonic school, it grows out of it and creates a type of music that has no fixed features as a musical genre: organ meditation. Marcel Dupré described his "Stations of the Cross" for organ from 1932 as a "symphonic poem". The fourteen stations of the sross, from the condemnation of Jesus to his burial, are indeed subtle meditations that go beyond the purely striking description of the sometimes very dramatic scenes. Dupré transcends the events and attempts a theological interpretation of the events.
Dupré, internationally acclaimed organist, improviser and composer, was the successor to Charles-Marie Widor and titulaire of the famous Cavaillé organ in the church of St. Sulpice in Paris for 37 years.
